Key Issues:

  • Florida Hurricanes: When Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jennie occurred, Senator Nelson made sure to help secure $14.5 billion in federal aid for victims.

  • Child Care: Senator Nelson believes in the continued protection of children and their health. In 2003, Senator Nelson asked the EPA to look into and determine if arsenic-treated wood, which is found in playgrounds across the country, is a major child risk. Senator Nelson then created legislation to stop the use of arsenic wood in playgrounds.

  • Veterans: In the 1960s, there was a study performed on U.S. Nelson made the Defense Department grant information about the chemical and biological weapon testing. He took a stand and called for immediate treatment for veterans that went through the testing and had been harmed.

Background:

Nelson was born September 29, 1942, in Miami, Florida. He attended the University of Florida, Yale University for his BA , and University of Virginia for his JD. Before he was elected to the senate, he was a Treasurer, a Insurance Commissioner, and a Fire Marshal of Florida from January 3, 1995 to January 3, 2001. He was also elected to the U.S House of the Representatives for several terms, and served in the U.S. army for several years. Nelson has been in his current office since January 3, 2001.
